LSS Canadian Swim Patrol

These programs are designed to develop H20 Proficiency, First Aid and Rescue skills. Candidates will improve on their skills, have fun, and prepare themselves to continue in the aquatic field of lifesaving.

Prerequisite: 9 years of age & the ability the swim 100m continuously. This course is not a prerequisite for Bronze Star.

BRONZE STAR & BFA/CPR 'A'

This course is for those who are looking to start their lifeguarding training early. Participants will develop problem-solving and decision-making skills individually and in partners. If successful, candidates will receive the Bronze Star award, Basic First Aid, CPR “A”, and become eligible for taking Bronze Medallion. 100% attendance is required. The practical exam will be held during the last class.

Prerequisites: 10-13 years of age & the ability to swim 100m continuously. Completion of Canadian Swim Patrol is recommended.

BRONZE MEDALLION & EMERGENCY FIRST AID WITH CPR 'B'

This course is the first step in the Lifesaving Society’s leadership program. It teaches the components of becoming a lifesaver in both aquatic and non-aquatic environments. It includes a mix of classroom and in pool learning. Successful candidates will receive the Bronze Medallion Award, Emergency First Aid, CPR “B”, and become eligible for taking Bronze Cross. 100% attendance is required. Final Exam will be held on the 11th week of class unless otherwise specified. Please bring previous awards prior to the exam for authentication.

Prerequisites: Minimum 13 years of age OR completion of Bronze Star.
Class Limit: Minimum of 5 participants required

BRONZE CROSS & STANDARD FIRST AID WITH CPR 'C'

This course is the second step in the Lifesaving Society’s leadership program. This course highlights the differences between lifesaving and lifeguarding, and focuses on the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork. It includes a mix of classroom and in pool learning. Students will need to bring their Canadian Lifesaving Manual to continue their learning from Bronze Medallion. Successful candidates will receive the Bronze Cross Award, Standard First Aid, CPR “C”, and become eligible to take National Lifeguard. 100% attendance is required. Final exam will be held on the 11th week of class unless otherwise specified. Please bring previous awards prior to the exam for authentication.

Prerequisites: Completion of Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid.

“Retake” Opportunities for Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross

Although it is highly recommended that candidates retake the full course if unsuccessful, retake courses are only available to candidates who have been successful on ALL instructor evaluated items, and have only examiner evaluated items left to complete. Candidates interested in participating in a “Retake” should contact the Aquatics Supervisor upon registration for the retake information package.

LSS DISTINCTION

Finished your Bronze Cross or NLS? Distinction is a challenging aquatic award that focuses on demanding aquatic emergency situations and is designed to develop advanced water rescue skill and knowledge.

LSS Lifesaving Fitness

Lifesaving Fitness teaches the importance of physical fitness in lifesaving. The award is designed for participants of all ages who learn how to measure, monitor, and maintain personal physical fitness for lifesaving emergencies.

Prerequisites: 30 years of age or under, or medical approval.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD – POOL OPTION (NLS)

Recognized as the standard measurement of lifeguard performance in Canada, NL education is designed to develop a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment and a mature responsible attitude towards the role of the lifeguard. Leadership, communication and team situations will be emphasized. Upon completion, successful candidates will receive the National Lifeguard Award, and be legally eligible for employment in a lifeguarding position. 100% attendance is required. Final exam will be held on the 11th week of class unless otherwise specified. Please bring previous awards prior to the exam for authentication.

Prerequisites: Completion of Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid, 16 years of age by the exam date.
